DIPHTHONGS AND TRIPHTHONGS

2. DIPHTHONG:
A complex speech sound or glide that begins with one vowel and gradually changes to another vowel within the same syllable, as (oi) in boil or  in fine.

PROPER DIPHTHONG:
A vowel digraph; a union of two vowels in the same syllable, only one of them being sounded; as, ai in rain, eo in people; called an improper diphthong.

IMPROPER DIPHTHONG:
A vowel digraph; a union of two vowels in the same syllable, only one of them being sounded; as, ai in
rain, eo in people; -- called an improper diphthong.

TRIPHTHONG:
is a monosyllabic vowel combination involving a quick but smooth movement of the articulator from one vowel quality to another that passes over a third. While "pure" vowels, or monophthongs, are said to have one target articulator position, diphthongs have two, and triphthongs three.
